Awesome Dawgs - Teaching People, Reaching Dogs Awesome Dawgs, a privately owned company that provides training for companion dogs, is dedicated to teaching people how to train their dogs through positive reinforcement. Proven to be the most effective method of learning for dogs, this reward-based style of training does not include aversive tools or harsh corrections because they are unnecessary and potentially harmful. Awesome Dawgs' focus is on training you to communicate with your dog in a clear, concise way so that your dog truly understands what you require of him or her. The result is that you create a bond with your dog from which true cooperation emerges; your dog does what you ask because he or she wants to do it, not because he or she is forced, or punished for not complying. Training classes with Awesome Dawgs are upbeat, fun and productive for you and your dog! Godfrey's is very happy to have formed a business alliance with Awesome Dawgs to bring these training services to humans and their canines. Awesome Dawgs is owned and operated by Mary Jo Carabello and Steve Smith, husband and wife, who are both certified obedience instructors. Steve is a graduate of Kutztown University's Canine Training and Management Program and Mary Jo graduated with honors from Animal Behavior College, CA, and was mentored by Bob Hafer, head trainer for the Lehigh Valley's "Gift of Sunshine" service dogs. Both Mary Jo and Steve are experienced in group classes and one-on-one basic obedience dog training and are members of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). All training classes are one hour long. Class size is limited so that instructors can work hands-on with individual students. Each week, time will be devoted to specific questions and concerns raised by attending dog parents. A minimum of 4 dogs is required to run a class, with a maximum of 6 dogs or 8 puppies. Please understand that if the class for which you have registered does not meet these requirements, you may be asked to move to another time slot. If the enrollment exceeds the current schedule, more classes will be added. Training classes will be held outside in the small dog fenced play area when weather permits and inside at Godfrey's Canine Learning Center. Parking is available in the upper grass area from the shop's parking lot. Puppy Class, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and CGC classes are offered at Godfrey's. For your convenience, both day and evening classes are available. Classes will be offered throughout the year. Schedule of classes (Start June 2008) IF CLASSES ABOVE FILL UP EARLY, MORE MAY BE ADDED TO THE SCHEDULE. Class Descriptions
Properly socializing a puppy is the key to raising a dog that is well-adjusted to many different people, places and situations. Puppy Class will help your puppy grow into a smart, confident and happy dog by providing playful interaction with other puppies and people. Puppies will take their first steps in learning appropriate behavior and obedience skills. You will learn the importance of becoming a dependable leader for your dog, laying the groundwork for a relationship that will last a lifetime.
In addition to learning basic obedience cues such as sit, down, stay and come when called, your dog will benefit from the socialization of a class setting. You will teach your dog appropriate alternatives to problem behaviors such as jumping up, barking, and leash-pulling.
This class is for the more advanced student. You will learn to add the "3 D's" (duration, distance, distractions) to behaviors your dog has already learned. Additionally, you will teach your dog to heel, stand for examination, wait and fetch, as well as new training techniques such as targeting and shaping.
Dogs and their handlers will raise their level of competency in all basic obedience cues by working intensively in the classroom and by taking 2 or 3 field trips to public venues. Advanced skills including off-leash work, introduction to agility and Rally Obedience will be offered as per the goals and abilities of the group.
Classes and testing for AKC’s Canine Good Citizen award are offered to dogs who qualify as candidates. Visit www.akc.org for test guidelines. Awesome
